Starbucks China and Univers, a global leader in AI and IoT for energy management, have announced a new technological partnership aimed at accelerating sustainability throughout Starbucks’ China value chain. The collaboration focuses on deploying Univers’ AI and IoT decarbonization solutions to digitally monitor and reduce Scope 3 emissions across Starbucks’ supplier network.

Through this initiative, Starbucks will gain real-time visibility into its supply chain emissions, allowing for more targeted emission reduction strategies, supplier support in low-carbon transitions, and enhanced compliance with evolving climate policies.

A major milestone in the partnership is the connection of over 7,500 Starbucks stores in China to a jointly developed AI and IoT platform. The system enables remote monitoring of key store equipment such as HVAC, lighting, and water filtration with a view to optimizing energy consumption while enhancing operational efficiency and customer experience.

Central to the partnership is the integration of Univers’ EnOS™ Ark Carbon Management System to build a comprehensive Supply Chain Carbon Management Platform. This platform will track emissions from core product categories including milk, beverages, food, and packaging. Special focus has been placed on milk, Starbucks’ largest carbon emitter, with the launch of a Sustainable Dairy Digital Management Tool to track emissions, plan decarbonization, and implement pilot projects at farms.

Additionally, the introduction of Univers’ One-Box edge computing device will support Starbucks’ digital infrastructure by managing multiple smart applications from a single terminal.

This partnership represents a bold step in Starbucks’ sustainability journey—harnessing data, technology, and collaboration to lead decarbonization efforts in the food and beverage retail sector.
