NORD/LB Acquires Voltiq to Expand Energy Transition Finance Services
NORD/LB Norddeutsche Landesbank has acquired Voltiq, a financial advisory firm specializing in renewable energy and energy transition infrastructure. The acquisition brings specialist transaction advice into the German bank’s financing business, expanding the services available to developers, project owners and investors.
Voltiq announced the acquisition on October 15, 2026, followed by a NORD/LB statement on October 16. The companies said the combination would connect advisory expertise with financing capabilities across different stages of energy infrastructure investment. Voltiq will continue operating under its existing name with its established team.
The acquisition price has not been disclosed, and no specific lending or investment target associated with the transaction has been announced. The immediate change is therefore an expansion of financial services, rather than a quantified commitment to fund additional renewable energy capacity.
Connecting Financial Advice with Access to Capital
The combined offering covers project structuring, financing arrangements, lending, underwriting, strategic transaction advice and equity services. NORD/LB intends to use Voltiq’s expertise to complement its existing financial products and support clients through a wider range of transactions.
For developers, these services address different financing needs. Equity raising brings investors into a project or business, while debt financing provides borrowed capital that must be repaid. Mergers and acquisitions advice supports transactions such as the purchase of operating assets, the sale of development portfolios or changes in corporate ownership.
Bringing these capabilities together could help clients coordinate financing and ownership decisions. However, access to a broader service offering does not guarantee that a project will secure funding. Individual transactions will still depend on their commercial viability, risk allocation and the requirements of lenders and investors.
NORD/LB said Voltiq’s clients would gain greater access to financial products, market knowledge and relationships in key regions. These are the companies’ stated objectives for the integration; the announcements do not provide evidence of completed client transactions resulting from the acquisition.
Coverage Across Renewable Energy and Supporting Infrastructure
Established in 2009, Voltiq advises on solar power, onshore and offshore wind, energy storage, hydrogen, bioenergy and electricity transmission networks. Its activities therefore extend beyond renewable electricity generation to infrastructure that supports the wider energy transition.
The company has an international presence, with locations listed in Amsterdam, Madrid and Bogotá. Retaining its brand and team provides continuity for clients while bringing the advisory business into NORD/LB’s broader platform.
NORD/LB brings a substantial renewable energy financing history to the combination. According to the bank, it has supported more than 1,100 projects representing approximately 108 gigawatts of installed capacity over more than 30 years. These figures describe its historical financing activity, rather than additional capacity attributable to the Voltiq acquisition.
The range of technologies covered also matters for financial assessment. A wind farm, a battery storage facility and a hydrogen project have different operating characteristics and sources of revenue. Developers need financing structures that reflect those differences, including how construction risks, operating costs and future income are distributed among project participants.
Battery Storage Illustrates the Financing Challenge
A separate transaction announced earlier in 2026 provides an example of NORD/LB’s existing work in energy transition infrastructure. In June, the bank, Banco Santander and ECO STOR announced financing for a battery energy storage project in Förderstedt, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
The facility is designed to provide 300 megawatts of power and 718 megawatt-hours of storage capacity, with operation scheduled for 2027. NORD/LB said the project would support renewable energy integration, grid stability and security of supply.
The project also has a long-term flexibility tolling agreement with Next Kraftwerke. According to the bank, this arrangement provides a commercial framework that combines greater revenue certainty with flexibility to optimize the battery across energy and balancing markets.
This example illustrates why financial structuring matters alongside the availability of capital. Storage projects need a credible approach to earning revenue, as well as equipment and a grid connection. Agreements governing how an asset operates and earns income can help lenders assess its ability to repay debt.
The Förderstedt financing predates the Voltiq acquisition and should be viewed as evidence of NORD/LB’s existing activities, rather than an outcome of the new combination.
Organizations Advising on the Acquisition
The acquisition involved several professional services firms. Hogan Lovells Cadwalader acted as NORD/LB’s legal adviser, while Deloitte provided tax and financial due diligence advice.
On Voltiq’s side, Kemperink Maarschalkerweerd Wouters served as legal adviser. Sacaba Capital & Advisory acted as financial adviser, and AvT Adviseurs provided tax advice. These organizations supported the corporate transaction; their roles were separate from financing individual renewable energy projects.
Practical Implications for the Energy Transition
For renewable energy businesses, the acquisition creates another route to obtaining transaction advice and financing services within the same banking platform. Its practical value will depend on whether that combination helps clients develop workable funding structures and complete investments.
The environmental outcome will depend on the projects ultimately financed and delivered. The acquisition announcements do not quantify additional emissions reductions or establish a new deployment target. Assessing its contribution to the energy transition will therefore require evidence of subsequent financing activity, project completion and operating performance.
