Mauritania and Hynfra Advance Plans for USD 1.5 Billion Green Ammonia Facility in Nouakchott
At the Mauritanides 2025 conference, Hynfra, a Polish developer of green hydrogen and ammonia systems, and the Government of Mauritania signed a landmark USD 1.5 billion Framework Agreement to develop a large-scale green ammonia facility in Nouakchott, Mauritania's capital.
Signed by H.E. Mohamed Ould Khaled, Minister of Energy and Petroleum, and Tomoho Umeda, General Director of Mauritania Green Ammonia SARL (MGA) and President of Hynfra P.S.A., the agreement builds on last year’s Memorandum of Understanding. The project aims to begin production of 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2030.
Located in the southern zone of the Somelec wind farm and linked to Port de l’Amitié for exports, the integrated facility will include solar and wind generation, electrolyzers, desalination, energy storage, and logistical infrastructure—all powered by renewables.
“Mauritania offers some of the best global conditions for renewable energy—abundant sun, steady wind, and decades of Polish ammonia expertise,” Umeda commented in a statement by Hynfra on Linkedin.
This initiative adds to a burgeoning portfolio of green hydrogen and ammonia ventures demonstrating Mauritania’s leadership in clean energy. The AMAN project, led by CWP Global, is set to deploy 30 GW of wind and solar and deliver up to 10 million tonnes of green ammonia annually. Meanwhile, the Megaton Moon project, with over 100,000 hectares secured near Nouakchott by GreenGo Energy, will roll out up to 6 GW of electrolysis capacity and is expected to produce 339,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually in its first phase by 2029.
As these projects take shape, Mauritania is setting itself apart not just nationally but as a regional leader in Africa’s clean-energy transformation. Its proximity to Europe also positions it as a vital exporter in the green energy market, helping power industrial growth both at home and across the region.
