Major Corporations Unite to Drive Low-Carbon Concrete Market
In a significant move to decarbonize the construction industry, nonprofits RMI and the Center for Green Market Activation (GMA) have launched the Sustainable Concrete Buyers Alliance (SCoBA). The alliance, founded by corporate giants Amazon, Prologis, and Meta, aims to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon cement and concrete by pooling their immense purchasing power.
The cement sector is responsible for approximately 8% of global CO₂ emissions, a footprint projected to grow. SCoBA will address this challenge through an innovative "book and claim" system. This model allows companies to purchase environmental attribute certificates for low-carbon concrete, even if the physical materials are used in a different project. This decoupling generates crucial revenue to fund producers' investments in cleaner technologies and infrastructure.
“The cement sector’s decarbonization challenge is also one of its greatest economic opportunities,” said Jon Creyts, CEO of RMI. By aggregating demand, SCoBA aims to create the market certainty needed for breakthrough technologies to scale.
Later this year, the alliance will initiate a competitive procurement process for low-carbon certificates to meet its founding members' collective demand. An active Request for Information (RFI) is currently seeking supplier input on the availability and mechanics of the proposed system.
The initiative builds on lessons from other hard-to-abate sectors like aviation and steel. “By connecting buyers and suppliers through a credible book and claim framework, we unlock the investments needed for next-generation solutions,” said GMA CEO Kim Carnahan.
Chris Atkins of Amazon noted that SCoBA’s approach provides the tools to support lower-carbon concrete production at scale, helping steer the market toward a net-zero future. The alliance aims to transform the industry by incentivizing the development and uptake of sustainable materials, ultimately reducing emissions from the built environment.
