Lidl Switzerland Trials AI Tool to Track Supply Chain Emissions
Lidl Switzerland is pioneering climate action in the retail sector by piloting a new AI-powered tool to measure and manage carbon emissions across its food supply chain. Partnering with European climate-tech scale-up Mondra, Lidl becomes the first Swiss retailer to test a standardized digital platform that calculates the CO₂ footprint of products from farm to shelf.
The AI-based solution allows Lidl to precisely track emissions at the product level across international and domestic supply chains. This initiative supports the company’s long-term climate strategy, which includes reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. As an interim target, Lidl aims to reduce emissions from its upstream agricultural supply chains (FLAG emissions) by 42.4% by 2034.
“This pilot lays the foundation for implementing our climate strategy with data-driven accuracy,” said Nicholas Pennanen, CEO of Lidl Switzerland, in a press release. “A uniform and internationally compatible standard for CO₂ accounting is crucial to make emissions measurable and comparable.”
Mondra’s platform enables real-time collaboration between Lidl and its suppliers, helping identify emission hotspots and implement targeted reduction measures. Jason Barrett, CEO of Mondra, emphasized the importance of this “collaborative decarbonization” approach, stating that the technology reveals hidden emissions and empowers stakeholders to take joint action toward climate goals.
A key partner in the pilot is AgroImpact, with whom Lidl has worked since 2024. Through AgroImpact’s platform, Lidl rewards farmers who produce more climate-friendly raw materials. Mondra’s system integrates this primary data, enhancing transparency and effectiveness in climate initiatives.
With this test run, Lidl Switzerland underscores the need for measurable data, shared standards, and cross-sector cooperation to drive climate progress across the food industry. The initiative marks a significant step toward sustainable retail and supply chain transformation.
