In a bold step toward its 2030 net-zero emissions goal, Google announced two new partnerships aimed at eliminating superpollutants—potent greenhouse gases that trap significantly more heat than carbon dioxide. Collaborating with Recoolit and Cool Effect, Google aims to eliminate over 25,000 tons of these gases by 2030, potentially preventing warming equivalent to 1 million tons of CO₂ long-term—or as much as 3 million tons in the short term.
Superpollutants, including fluorinated gases and methane, are often overlooked in climate strategies despite their immediate climate impact. Google's new partnerships focus on destroying refrigerant gases from cooling systems in Indonesia and methane from landfills in Brazil, tackling sources of pollution that are both damaging and under-addressed.
Recoolit, one of Google’s key partners, praised the alliance. “Google has committed to a multi-year purchase of 250,000 carbon credits, supporting our mission to find and destroy refrigerant gas worldwide,” Recoolit stated. Their technology emphasizes transparency, providing a digital audit trail for every credit, ensuring the verified destruction of harmful chemicals.
This move builds on Google’s broader climate action strategy, which includes reducing emissions across its operations and investing in carbon-free energy and removals. By aligning superpollutant mitigation with long-term carbon neutrality, Google continues to push for scalable, science-driven climate solutions. As Recoolit noted, the partnership not only accelerates immediate impact but also signals a unified strategy that could inspire wider industry adoption.
