At the UN Global Compact's (UNGC) Inaugural Global Business Summit in Jakarta, 24 of the world’s leading solar companies, including JA Solar (Nasdaq: JASO), Jinko Solar (NYSE: JKS) and LONGi (SHH: 601012), jointly launched the Global Solar Sustainable Alliance (GSSA). This landmark initiative aims to advance sustainability across the global solar industry and its value chain.
The summit brought together high-profile leaders from government, industry, and academia, including UNGC CEO Sanda Ojiambo, UN Resident Coordinator in China Siddharth Chatterjee, Indonesian Minister Luhut B. Pandjaitan, and Bridgewater’s Ray Dalio. The initiative highlights the solar industry’s essential role in the global energy transition and climate action efforts.
Launched at a time of rapid growth in solar energy, the GSSA addresses critical social and environmental challenges while reinforcing commitments to clean energy and sustainability. The initiative focuses on green mineral sourcing, ecosystem and biodiversity protection, equitable development, and inclusive growth.
Aligned with the UNGC’s Ten Principles and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the GSSA outlines nine actionable pathways under three core pillars, aiming to embed ESG best practices across the solar value chain and expand the sector’s global positive impact. A key pathway in the GSSA is to "cut energy consumption and carbon emissions, adapt to climate change, establish science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets, and achieve net-zero emissions as soon as possible".
The UNGC strongly endorsed the initiative, urging more solar companies and partners to join the initiative to advance sustainability in the industry.
