Ecocem Secures U.S. Certification for Low-Carbon Cement Technology
Ecocem, Europe’s leading provider of low-carbon cement solutions, has achieved ASTM C1157 certification in the United States, marking a breakthrough for sustainable construction in one of the world’s largest cement markets.
Unlike traditional cement standards, which dictate material composition, ASTM C1157 is a performance-based certification that emphasizes durability, strength, and reliability. Ecocem’s ACT (Advanced Cement Technology) surpassed these benchmarks while cutting carbon emissions and energy use, proving that sustainable cement can compete with conventional products on both performance and cost.
The approval comes at a critical time for the U.S., which imports nearly a quarter of its cement supply. Ecocem’s low-carbon solution offers a domestic alternative that could enhance supply chain resilience, reduce emissions, and support infrastructure policy goals across political lines.
“This is a significant moment for Ecocem and for low-carbon cement globally,” said Donal O’Riain, the company’s founder and group managing director. “The U.S. market presents a huge opportunity to decarbonize cement at scale, without increasing costs or complexity.”
Ecocem is also advancing plans for its first North American project—a proposed terminal and milling facility at the Port of Los Angeles. The site aims to establish a resilient supply of high-performance, low-carbon cement in California, supporting the state’s infrastructure and climate objectives.
ACT reduces emissions by lowering clinker content, the main source of cement’s carbon footprint, by up to 70%. It replaces clinker with locally available supplementary cementitious materials, optimizing performance while reducing environmental impact.
The U.S. certification follows major European milestones, including regulatory approvals in France and partnerships with leading global contractors. Together, these developments signal Ecocem’s readiness to scale its cleantech innovation worldwide.
